A Quote by the Artist

"I was captivated by the drawings of the old masters during my art history studies. Preliminary sketches
by the 17th - 19th century artists contained economic strokes that formed the structure, the very meaning in
their paintings. Emotion and power were conveyed by the style, the speed and the immediacy of the
strokes; as in music, the blanks often spoke louder than the notes. By leaving parts of my compositions
'unfinished' I intend to echo the power of the drawings I remembered.

The subjects were influenced by the Baroque tendency to emphasize human expression and emotion. The
colored paper used by Van Dyke, Coypel and others inspired me to underpaint in salmon-gold, and
soulful green colors. These paintings are really coloured drawings emphasizing the initial, oil-stick
sketch. They were tinted in the final stages with successive oil/varnish glazes.

I hope to extend the work of earlier painters who championed the freshness of the sketch and the
painterly approach."
